The Vancouver Canucks got fans excited by announcing that veteran forward Phil Kessel would practice with their AHL affiliate this week, possibly hinting at an NHL comeback.

Kessel hit the ice with the Abbotsford Canucks, but concerns arose when reporter Bill Miljure of CTV News noticed he seemed tired during his first skate with the team.

He suggested Kessel might need some conditioning before returning to the NHL and it's a major issue.

Despite his eagerness to contribute, Kessel's lack of recent play raises questions about his readiness.

Phil Kessel looking absolutely gassed at times during his first skate with the Abbotsford #Canucks. A conditioning stint is clearly warranted for the 36-year-old if he's going to play in the #NHL this year. More tonight at 6 on.

Rick Tocchet said Phil Kessel is in the "first phase" of skating and that there's still some time before we see Phil the Thrill potentially sign in Vancouver 👀 #ChicletsCast

Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet acknowledged that Kessel is still early in his training, urging patience before any potential signing with Vancouver.
