BREAKING: Blackhawks Goaltender Accepts Invite to Rep His Country at 2023 World Championship
In a thrilling announcement on Monday afternoon, the Rockford IceHogs revealed that their talented goaltender, Drew Commesso, will be suiting up for Team USA at the 2023 IIHF World Championship in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia from May 12 to May 28. Commesso's incredible skills between the pipes have earned him this prestigious opportunity to represent his country on the international stage.
Commesso, who is just 20 years old, was originally drafted by the Blackhawks in the second round (46th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. He signed his three-year, entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks and a PTO with the IceHogs on April 11, following an impressive season that helped lead Boston University to the Frozen Four. With a record of 24-8-0, a .913 save percentage and 2.46 goals-against average, including two shutouts, Commesso was a vital part of BU's success.
It's no surprise that Commesso caught the eye of the USA Olympic team, where he put on a goaltending clinic, registering a 2-0-0 record, 1.00 goals-against average and .964 save percentage. Clearly, this young man has got the talent to succeed at the highest levels of the game.
On the other hand, it's a shame that Connor Bedard declined the invitation to represent his country, Canada, at the World Championship, citing concerns over the risk of injury. While it's understandable that he wants to protect his future, many fans will be disappointed to see one of the country's brightest young talents sit this one out.
