Still having no concrete time-table on Tristan's return, the net-minding will fall to Louis Domingue and Alex D'Orio. It was confirmed today, that Casey DeSmith underwent successful core muscle surgery, this morning - which is good news and bad. Good, because it was successful, and he obviously needed it. Bad, because it means there's no way he can come back to the playoffs, no matter how far the Penguins get.
This is the second time DeSmith has had core muscle surgery that has taken him out of the playoffs. He went through the same thing last season, and ended up having the surgery June 10th.
There is no question that Louis Domingue played a large part in helping Pittsburgh get that first win of the series. However, when facing a fully rested Rangers team, for an entire 60 minutes, adjustments will need to be made. Now that the Penguins know they can score on the record-setting Shesterkin, they need to find the perfect chemistry with their own goalie to help him out defensively as much as they can. And Domingue will have to be ready for those rapid fire shots he will undoubtedly get from Fox, Panarin, Zibanejad, Kreider, and more.
Penguins fans have already rallied behind him, and Coach Sullivan seems pleased with his performance, has well. «He has a little swagger to him. He believes in his game and you can see it in his body language. And I think it's contagious with our group.» Let's hope so.
The next two games are in Pittsburgh, and the Penguins had a 23-13-5 record at PPG. However, the Rangers had a record of 25-14-2 for away games. This series could not be any more evenly matched (on paper, at least) if it tried.
