Although the shots on goal were equal for the two teams after one period, it was all Blackhawks on the scoreboard. Calvin de Haan scored the first goal of the night, his second on the year. And then the Blackhawks would score two of their more impressive goals all season back to back from Sam Lafferty and Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks would find themselves up 3-0 to end the first period.
The Blackhawks were first on the scoreboard in the second period as well as Seth Jones found the back of the net for his 5th goal of the season. However, the momentum would start to swing in the way of the Sabres as they were able to score 3 unanswered goals to make the score 4-3.Victor Olofsson accounted for 2 of those goals, and Kyle Okposo netted the other.
At the start of the 3rd period the Blackhawks still held the lead at 4-3. Vinnie Hinostroza changed that with his 11th goal on the year to make it a 4-4 game. Alex DeBrincat would then come through for the Blackhawks as he has done time and time again this season to give the lead back to Chicago. However, similar to his heroics in the game against Las Vegas on Saturday, it would not be enough. Alex Tuch would make up for his open net miss earlier in the game and tie the game up for the Sabres. Then in one of the most bizarre game ending sequences in recent memory, Tage Thompson takes a slap-shot that breaks his stick and goes well wide of the net. However, it would ricochet off the boards, then off of Kevin Lankinen's skate, into the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Blackhawks, this sequence would happen to late in the game for them to have any real chance at tying the game up at that point. The Blackhawks would lose to the Sabres by a final score of 6-5. The Blackhawks will be back in action again on Thursday as they hit the road to take on the Florida Panthers.
