Auston Matthews and Alex Ovechkin are both massive superstars playing at the highest possible level hockey has to offer. Both players are on opposite sides of their careers, but are the most crucial player on their respective teams. Let's take a look at both Ovechkin and Matthews' performance over the last few seasons.
Alex Ovechkin has been scoring goals since he first stepped foot in Washington for the 2005 season. Over the last three seasons, Ovechkin has continued his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record and has a real chance to top it. In the last three seasons, Ovechkin has scored 122 goals and tallied 77 assists and has led the Capitals to the playoffs every season. Ovechkin finally hoisted his first Stanley Cup in 2018 and hopes to lift Lord Stanley one more time before he hangs up the skates.
Auston Matthews is the true definition of a superstar. Matthews was drafted by the Maple Leafs first overall in the 2016 draft. Over the last three seasons, Matthews has scored 148 goals and tallied 104 assists. Matthews has dominated since entering the league and will undoubtedly have his name in the conversation as one of the greatest American born skaters ever when it is all said and done. Matthews has led the Maple Leafs to the playoffs every season to this point and hopes to end the Leafs Stanley Cup drought in the near future.
Happy Birthday to Alex Ovechkin and Auston Matthews! It will be interesting to see if Ovechkin can chase down Gretzky and win one more Cup in the process, as well as seeing if Matthews can help end the Leafs daunting cup drought.
