The Blue Jackets traded Foligno to the Toronto Maple Leafs as they pursued their Cup run during the COVID pandemic. Afterward, he spent two seasons with Boston and then signed with the Blackhawks this year.
It is widely expected that he will be traded once again, as his leadership and ability to score points will be sought after by another team interested in a playoff run. Acquiring that leadership will likely require a draft pick and/or a prospect to be sent back to the Blackhawks.
According to NHL trade rumors.me, there are two potential landing spots for him as the NHL trade deadline approaches.
The New York Rangers could benefit from a player of his calibre. With several young players and the loss of other players in this year's offseason, including Tarasenko and Patrick Kane, the Rangers could use veteran leadership and a player who can assist their bottom six. He also brings grit and toughness that could be valuable during a playoff series.
The other organization in consideration would be the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings are an up-and-coming group of players, consisting of a mix of young talent and some veterans from previous Cup-winning runs. Foligno would provide them with the necessary assets for their bottom six, including penalty-killing and net-front coverage.
We will have to wait and see which team, if any, will trade for him as the deadline approaches in March 2024.
