Well, Kyle Dubas stated in his season-ending interview that the organization simply cannot get better than it is, and that the team is focusing on signing their remaining free agents- not looking to make any drastic changes. It seems as if things have changed, the Leafs did not give Ilya Mikeyev the money he wanted so he chose to hit the free agent market, leaving Dubas's plan of re-signing his free agents invalid.
Now that Dubas's off-season blueprint has gone up in flames, it appears he is trying to do something MUCH larger, and he may have came to the realization that the Leafs are in need of a elite-tier defenseman, especially if they plan to have goaltender Matt Murray as a full-time goaltender.
That elite-tier defenseman being Jacob Chychrun, a 24-year old 6 foot 4 heavyweight 220lb big body who does not take crap from anybody, even on his current mess of a team, the Arizona Coyotes. He also holds a $4.6 million dollar cap hit for the next 3 years which is quite amazing.
The cost of the Leafs getting a quality defenseman like Chychrun, is William Nylander. Nylander holds a near-seven million dollar contract and is eating up nearly 10% of the Leafs total cap space, while not producing as someone should for his current earnings.
According to the Hockey Blogger, the Maple Leafs are looking to offer forward William Nylander to the Arizona Coyotes for defenceman Jakob Chychrun.
Nylander (26 years of age) vs Jacob Chychrun (24 years of age), both teams can make a fair swap, to shake up their rosters and exchange elite pieces which both teams are struggling in.
