In the eyes of the fans, Patrick Kane was supposed to play his entire career in a Blackhawks sweater. When the Blackhawks decided it was time to blow up the roster and rebuild properly, that dream scenario seemed to die. Kane was traded to the Rangers as they looked to blow open a championship window, while the Blackhawks slammed shut.
The Rangers ultimately came up short of their Stanley Cup dream after losing in seven games to the New Jersey Devils. With Kane set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, could Kane return home to Chicago?
Kane spoke with the media this afternoon and seemingly squashed any hopes of a reunion with the Blackhawks in the near future. Kane stated, "They're rebuilding, so that's never crossed my mind before to be honest with you." It's hard to blame Kane in this situation. He is looking for a team that is in win-now mode and the Blackhawks are far from that. At this point in his career, Kane is trying to rack up those big playoff moments and to add another ring or two to his collection.
Kane also spoke on the possibility of returning to the Rangers this summer. Kane stated, "I would love to be back. If I can feel better, with this team and this opportunity, I'd love that chance." Kane was a great fit for the team, but they will be cap strapped this summer. We'll have to wait and see where Kane ends up, but it is sounding like the Rangers are a likely destination.
