Proposed Hawks/Maple Leafs Trade Seems One-sided

A recent article depicted a proposed trade between the Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs which seems very one-sided.

Get this. It had the Hawks sending Alex DeBrincat, Kirby Dach, and Connor Murphy to the Leafs. In return, the Chicago club would receive Petr Mrazek, Jake Muzzin, and the Toronto team's first-round pick, which will be #25 this year.

When the salaries are compared, there is a $2.24 million difference with the Hawks sending $11.725 million, and Toronto losing $9.485 million.

The inequities begin when one evaluates the trade. The Hawks are in the midst of a rebuild, so why would they trade for Muzzin who is 33 years old? Mrazek is a bit younger at 30.

This is a very heavily weighted trade benefiting the Leafs. They get a top line scorer in DeBrincat who tallied 41 goals, 37 assists at just 24 years old.

Dach is just 21, and has only 19 goals, 40 assists in 152 NHL games. The 2019 third overall pick has struggled to make a difference in the NHL. But, he's still young and shouldn't be moved quite yet.

Then, adding Murphy to the jackpot trade for the Leafs just adds salt to the wound. He is 29 years old, and has been in the league for nine years. He is a stay-at-home blueliner who is not an offensive threat.

He only has 32 goals, 88 assists in 551 games. His physical game makes up for it with 1,174 hits and 1,041 blocks.

For the Hawks this trade would give them a first round draft pick, but at #25 it's unlikely to get a player anywhere near DeBrincat's skill level. It has been in the rumor world that DeBrincat would return what this trade includes with him alone coming from Chicago. Adding in two more players is just insane.

Does this proposed trade help Toronto? You bet it does. While new general manager Kyle Davidson might have been born at night, he wasn't born last night. There has to be better trade options out there to serve the Hawks much more.

So, to make this trade equitable the Leafs need to give up a young defenseman like Timothy Liljegren or Rasmus Sandin. Or better yet how about including someone like Michael Bunting?

Davidson wouldn't be this gullible to lose DeBrincat AND Dach for a return nowhere near where it should be.

Let's get real here, the Hawks would get fleeced to agree with a terrible trade like this!
