31 year old mobile defenseman Nick Leddy is about to enter unrestricted free agency this summer. Leddy has had a solid NHL career over 12 years the smooth skating defenseman has racked up 360 points in 851 games with an average of 20:37 of TOI. Given his age this most likely going to be Leddy's last big contract and the Atheltic's Jeremy Rutherford has offered insight into what that number could look like.
Based off the Evolving Hockey analytics projected value, Leddy is projected to land a 4 or 5 year deal with an AAV of $4.9mill. While some may look at this as an overpay when looking at Leddy's career +/- of -60, it should be taken into account that he was a part of two very bad defensive teams in the 2017/18 New York Islanders and this past years Detroit Redwings. He was a -42 that year in New York and -33 this year in Detroit which have by far been the two lowest +/-'s of his career (his career low before those two years was his sophomore season in Chicago at -12). Leddy is a middle pair defenseman capable of playing on the powerplay and joining a rush with his smooth skating ability and is currently in the top 5 pending UFA defenseman for this summer. Leddy could easily be the beneficairy of an off season overpay from a GM who misses out on the offensive talents of Kris Letang and John Klindberg.
