Unfortunately, we've known for quite sometime that the Blackhawks were not going to playing hockey this time of year. However, what better way to cheer up than to look back at one of the more memorable playoff games of the Blackhawks dynasty years. On this date in 2014, the Chicago Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The Blackhawks came into this game feeling pretty good after a 5-2 victory in game one. And that momentum definitely carried over to game 2. Chicago was first on the board in the first period with a goal from Jonathan Toews. Toews really played clean-up duty on this one, as Duncan Keith fed Marian Hossa a beautiful pass up the ice to make it a 1-on-1 with the Minnesota Wild goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. As Hossa tried to beat Bryzgalov the puck was knocked into the air and Jonathan Toews came to put it in the back of the net for a 1-0 Blackhawks lead. That is how the score would stay for the remainder of the first period.
The second period would stay 1-0 until the final minute when Brandon Saad would score from deep in the slot to make it a 2-0 lead for the Blackhawks. Minnesota would try and make things interesting with an early third period goal from Cody McCormick, but that would be the only time the Wild could find the back of the net.
Late in the third period, Bryan Bickell scored his 5th playoff goal of 2014 to make it 3-1. And just over a minute later, Brandon Saad would get the empty netter to give the Blackhawks a 4-1 in game 2.
