No matter who you root for, there are a few things all hockey fans can agree on. The fact that Mike Bossy is a legend, is one of them. With his passing just 3 weeks ago, it seems fitting that this incredible milestone memory presents itself, now.
On May 8, 1982, the New York Islanders and the Vancouver Canucks started their final first game in their quest for the Cup. Vancouver struck first, but by the end of the fist period, the Isles had the lead, 3-2, including a goal by Mike Bossy, who had the first non-PPG goal of the period. To keep that momentum going, New York scored the next goal (on a Power Play) to take a 2 point lead, but Vancouver evened it up and they went into the 3rd period tied at 4. Once again, Vancouver got the first goal, but Mike Bossy sent them into OT with the only other non-PPG for the Islanders. And then, Bossy made par for the course by completing not only a hat trick, but the game, itself, with 2 seconds left.
The Islanders would continue on to win their next 3 games, sweeping the Canucks to earn their 3rd consecutive and overall Stanley Cup, becoming the first U.S. team to win 3 straight finals. In the 4 games, Mike Bossy scored 7 of New York's 18 goals, including the game and series winning goal in the second period of Game 4. He also scored one more after that for good measure. Both were Power Play goals. He also won the Con Smythe trophy.
