The past several months for the Blackhawks have been quite eventful, to say the least. When the Wirtz family and General Manager Kyle Davidson made the decision to turn the page on the previous core and captains Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, a new era began with the selection of Connor Bedard as the first overall pick in this year's draft.
As the summer continues to wind down and the training camp is about to begin, many fans and pundits are wondering whether Head Coach Luke Richardson will choose Connor Bedard as the new team captain. As most people know, the coach is the one who decides the captain, and with Bedard not having played a game yet, it will be interesting to see if the team goes without a captain this year or if Bedard will don the "C" right away.
During a rebuilding phase, most teams usually wait a season and build their leadership group through a committee approach until the head coach identifies the right player to be the captain. While I believe Bedard will eventually become a captain, I don't think it will happen this year. In my opinion, it's almost certain that he will make the team and be the best player this season; however, he still needs to earn the captaincy.
Adding extra pressure to Bedard's shoulders is unnecessary, especially considering the team's likely lack of success this season. They will probably be aiming for another top-five pick in next year's draft
