That brings in questions about your depth in goal, is Alex Stalock or Petr Mrazek your long-term 1A-1B combination? As we saw, injuries plagued the position and at one point in the season, Jaxson Stauber was the call-up the team relied upon.
NHL Rumors: 3 Landing Spots For Mackenzie Blackwood This Offseason
With Akira Schmid's ascendancy, the New Jersey Devils' goal-tending situation just got crowded. It looks like Mackenzie Blackwood may be the odd man out. Unfortunately, he hasn't developed the way New Jersey needed him to, as he isn't the starting goal-tender he was hyped to be.
With him hitting the market soon as an RFA, it seems likely that he will have to revive his career elsewhere.
With Alex Stalock and Petr Mrazek both becoming free agents one year after the next, Blackwood may be a fit and a reason to let both walk and let the youngsters take reign in a low-pressure environment.
It could be a positive situation for Blackwood allowing him to regain his confidence, allowing him the chance for the Blackhawks to develop correctly, which he didn't in New Jersey.
Not to mention his cap hit is slightly more affordable than Mrazek whose AAV sits at $3.8 Million right now.
Blackwood may get a chance in Chicago that many have had to revive their career and it is a low-risk, high-reward situation for both parties.
