BREAKING: Ex-Chicago Blackhawk Forced to Retire After Saddened News
Sami Lepisto, the former NHL defenseman, has been forced to retire at 38 due to a heart issue, ending his career with HIFK in the Finnish Elite League before it even began. Lepisto was a former Chicago Blackhawk throughout his time in the NHL.
"After further investigation, playing was no longer recommended. The risk is small, but it is there. I was very keen and I would have liked to be part of this team, but of course health is always the first priority." - Sami Lepisto
The medical examination revealed the risk of continuing to play was too high. Lepisto's impressive journey included stints in the NHL, KHL, Swedish Hockey League, and Swiss National League.
"Looking back on that time now, it feels like it went really fast. I got to play in top leagues, meet new people and experience great things about the sport. But at some point it always comes to an end."
"It's time to take a breather and spend time with my family."
He now plans to prioritize family time after a remarkable international career, winning Olympic and World Championship medals, along with the AHL's Calder Cup in 2009 with the Hershey Bears.
