BREAKING: The NHL Officially Suspends Star Defensemen Cale Makar
As the Colorado Avalanche and Seattle Kraken faced off in Game 4, the hockey world was taken aback by the Kraken's impressive performance throughout the season and early playoffs. While they earned their first home playoff win, the task ahead may be tougher after losing a key player to injury due to a dirty hit by Cale Makar.
The Kraken started the game strong, once again jumping to an early lead in the series. Makar, looking to ignite a spark, made a reckless hit against Kraken forward Jared McCann. Despite the puck being nowhere near the play, Makar struck McCann in a vulnerable and unsuspecting spot, sending him hard into the boards.
Initially called a five-minute major, the penalty was later reduced to a minor after an official initiated a review. While some officials may not see the hit as dangerous as a typical boarding call since Makar made contact with McCann's shoulders, the vulnerability of McCann's position and being away from the puck make this an especially egregious hit.
Makar has himself a hearing with the NHL Player Safety Committee this morning and he is officially suspended for one game. Details below:
