While the Philadelphia Flyers hired John Tortorella to fill their head coaching role, he wasn't their first choice.
According to reports, the Flyers had actually offered Barry Trotz a multi-year dear worth north of $7 million a season. A contract like that that would've made Trotz the highest paid head coach in NHL history, but the veteran bench boss turned it down.
The question then becomes, why did Barry turn down such a lucrative deal? Did he not want to be part of the rebuild the Flyers will be going through? Perhaps he didn't get along with the team's management/ownership for some reason.
It was rumored that Trotz was seriously being considered for the open head coaching gig in Vegas. Bruce Cassidy was hired for that role.
So now every NHL fan is wondering, where will Barry end up coaching? It could very well be in Winnipeg where he was originally reported to have been a candidate.
One must admit if Trotz wanted to coach a team with a shot at making the playoffs, he wouldn't choose the Flyers. They were horrible this last season with a mediocre 25-46-11 record fur just 61 points finishing 29th in the league.
Trotz is a smart coach and the money alone won't convince him to coach just anywhere.
We should know something soon on where Trotz lands, but turning down that kind of money seems a bit selective on his part.
