One of the many current issues with the app is anyone is able to a blue checkmark (meaning they are verified) for a small fee of $8, and many are abusing it. A blue check mark states the person tweeting is a authentic account and provides legitimate information.
Accounts that pay for verification can only be acknowledged as a person paying for the blue check if there profile is checked out, and the blue check is clicked on, which will show this.
But when seen on your timeline, you cannot identify if it is a fake verification checkmark.
Hockey, baseball, football and even basketball fans are all taking advantage of Elon Musks' new $8 verification feature by making fake accounts under names of authentic media members, or NHL players, and announcing trades, like the one below.
That was not the only ''trick'' hockey fans got played on, someone created a fake account of NHL insider/reporter/analyst Elliot Friedman and tweeted that the Chicago Blackhawks waived Seth Jones. Which due to his current contract makes absolutely no sense, but some Blackhawks fans still got scared.
