Barry Trotz seems to be the top candidate on the market for head coach. The Blackhawks have interviewed Trotz for the position, however there have been no formal agreements made at this time. With his years of experience, and his focus on the defensive line, he could be the best option on the market. However Philadelphia Flyers and Vegas Golden Knights are among other teams to have also shown interest as well. It may come down to if Trotz is willing to take on a full rebuild of a team.
Speaking of the Las Vegas Golden Knights, former head coach, Peter Deboer is also looking for a new coaching job following being fired from the team. Despite leading the team to the playoffs the past two seasons his failure to do so this season has led to his departure. Deboer has coached in the NHL since 2008 for the Panthers, Devils, and Sharks before his time with the Knights. During his history as a head coach Deboer has established a pattern, where the first season with a new team is successful, and then funnels down as the seasons pass. That being said, would the Chicago Blackhawks be willing to take a chance for one good season only to be brought back to square one the next?
Also on the table is John Tortorella, the record holder of most American born head coach history. Following his departure from the Columbus Blue Jackets last year, it looks like Tortorella could be a contender for the Chicago Blackhawks. Following his 21 years of coaching Tortorella has been known for a determined and rigorous coaching style, which could help whip the team into shape. As well as placing a focus on the goaltenders, which the Blackhawks have been lacking towards the end of the season. Tortorella was known for rotating the starting goalies, which could help ease up the wear and tear on just using one main goalie. The biggest advantage is that Tortorella has worked with a rebuilding team at their worst and brought them to be contenders. In 2000 when Tortorella was hired as head coach the Tampa Bay Lightning were the worst in the league, and by 2004 the team were Stanley Cup Champions. If Tortorella would be up for another long haul, the Blackhawks could benefit from Tortorella's experience.
Whoever the Blackhawks choose, it has become apparent that the focus is getting the team to the best of their ability in preparation for next season.
