The driver of the truck, Victor Santos, failed a sobriety test on the scene and has been charged with a DUI, among other things.
According to a police report, Santos did not attempt to brake or swerve to avoid hitting the bus that was carrying the team. As a result, 16 people were injured in the crash, most of whom were players.
Fast forward a little less than a week, and St. Ignatius College Prep had a hockey game that was played, but it was the varsity squad rather than JV.
"Some of them have a long road obviously with their injuries and physical therapy and whatever will come down the road but I think this and being part of a team and being part of a sport, when you get back to that? That's the best part about this," said Saint Ignatius Athletic Director Erik Eastman.
St. Ignatius took on Mount Carmel for the first game since the crash, and it began with a prayer circle to honor and pray for the people involved in the crash.
St. Ignatius is set to play another game Saturday, in which they will have a more formal honoring ceremony prior to the game to bring about awareness for the players involved in the crash.
"It's extremely important to return a sense of normalcy and get these guys back on the ice and playing,"
The game is set to take place just a few hours after their football team competes in the 6A State Semifinals against Prairie Ridge for football.
