Could Blackhawks and Penguins make a deal this summer?
The Blackhawks are about to enter a period in their history where they have never done something like this. General manager Kyle Davidson has set up the team so that he can essentially replace entire offensive units within one year since all players are working off of a one-year contract.
Doing this action has freed up over $40 million in cap space. It puts Chicago in the basement of the standings and the salary cap.
The Blackhawks will be hungry this offseason and the following few offseasons to restock their cupboards and rebuild the team from scratch.
During a mock trade with the NHL trade rumours website, they showed a deal that occurred between the Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Hawks would be acquiring Michael Granlund and a third-round draft pick which belonged to Vegas for a seventh-round pick in 2023.
It would be viewed as a pure salary dump by the newly minted president of the Penguins Kyle Dubas. The Penguins are currently in flux as they are charting their new path with their new president which remains to what he will do.
This trade would help the Blackhawks acquire a veteran forward who would help add depth to the team, give the team some leadership and help the young kids including superstars in making Connor Bedard a chance to learn how to play in the NHL.
I expect the Blackhawks to be hyper-active in the trade market along with their drafting which will be held on June 28th and 29th in Nashville TN.
