Despite months of cryptic comments, concerns for injury, and lackluster on-ice performance, Toews is persistent in fulfilling his role as captain. He continues to prioritize his teammates before himself (which is good AND bad for multiple reasons, but I don't plan to harping on negatives in this piece).
At the end of the day, this unlikely «room and board» situation is simply hilarious and I'm just happy that Reese Johnson (and Co.) has a home through the rest of the season. Considering his consistency on the 4th line, it's safe to say he won't be sent back to Rockford, and that commute to practice/games each day is nearly impossible to ask of any player coming up from the minors. It's far from uncommon for veterans to house newly-drafted players or young prospects from their minor-league affiliatefor example, after being drafted 3rd overall in his draft, Kirby Dach was housed by the likes of Brent Seabrook.
Needless to say, there is a bounty of information to obtain from Toews, and Reese Johnson isn't taking it for granted. Johnson described the situation succinctly, «It has been awesome, really special,» after joking «Probably too much hair around the house for [Toews].» All in all, this is a great chance for Johnson to spend time with a high-caliber veteran with an impressive resume to show for it. I'd be interested to hear first-hand about the day-to-day operations in the Toews household and the shenanigans that unfold.
Player Update:
Johnson has 1G, 5A, 6P throughout 30 games played this season. His last point was an assist in the loss against Dallas 4/10/2022. BEST STAT: He has 120 hits in his 30 games this seasonhe's not afraid of anyone! As of four days ago, he signed a two-year deal with the 'Hawks capping out at $800,000 per year AAV. This contract keeps him (for the time being) from becoming a restricted free agent until following the 2023-24 season.
