She accomplished this feat back on September 23, 1992 when she played in net for the Tampa Bay Lightning in an exhibition game against the St. Louis Blues.
Rheaume was able to play for an entire period with the NHL's newest team and expressed it as something she never even dreamed of. Following the game, Rheaume stated, "I never even thought I would even play in the NHL. It wasn't even a dream of mine." She also went on to say that she had just stumbled onto the opportunity.
I don't know if that was the case as she made her name and skill well known when helping goaltend Canada's Women's Team to a gold medal at the Women's World Championships in.
30 years later, and Rheaume is back around the league. She has accepted a position with the Los Angeles Kings, as part of their player development program, after she expressed desire to Kings president while her sons were at hockey camps in the LA area.
Rheaume is excited for this opportunity because prior to this, she was helping boys and girls get into the game of hockey. She now believes this new chance will help her to show those same kids that there are ways to get to the highest level outside of the rink.
Rheaume is added to a list of very deserving female employees throughout NHL front offices and player development programs. But, to this day, everyone is aware that she is the first -and only- woman to play in an NHL game.
