The NHL head coaching landscape seems to change at a very fast rate. Recently Bruce Cassidy was relieved of his duties with the Boston Bruins. That does nothing but cloud the head coaching openings even more.
But, if the head brass with the Stars can land Deboer as their next head coach, it may be a great decision. He is a proven winner taking the Vegas Golden Knights to the Western Conference Final not once, but twice.
His one fault could be the way he mishandled his goaltenders Robin Lehner and Logan Thompson.
An article by Justin Cutbert, NHL Reporter for Yahoo Canada Sports stated issues Deboer had with Lehner.
"After a scathing review of Robin Lehner in a 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils two nights previous, wherein which he quibbled with the goals allowed in a key matchup, DeBoer decided to go back to his primary starter versus Washington. But after making 12 saves on 13 shots in an opening period deadlocked at one goal apiece, Lehner was lifted at the intermission in favor of Logan Thompson, who had been lauded for his consistency since spelling injured backup netminder Laurent Brossoit following the disappointing effort from Lehner versus the Devils.»
That seems suspect for a coach to pull a goalie who has stopped 12 of 13 shots, unless of course, he was injured. With Lehner's many health issues, that could have been the case.
No doubt, the competition to fill NHL head coaching spots is heating up. Deboer is a very capable, results orientated coach. He could be what takes the Stars to get over the hill and into deeper playoff competition, if hired.
The Stars did take the powerful Calgary Flames to seven games in the opening round of the playoffs. With Deboer behind the bench going forward, it would not only be awesome, but expected that they improve upon that.
Deboer's 15-year record as a head coach is something that has to help him in being hired. He has a 513-379-123 mark, which equated to a very impressive .566 points percentage.
So will Deboer be transitioning from the Sin City to deep in the heart of Texas? We should soon find out.
