Hockey Canada has been embroiled in scandals lately, starting with the WJC 2018 scandal and ending with their board of directors resigning. The organization's lack of fortitude when it comes to addressing sexual assault is just one chink in its armor.

Yet, muckraker Rick Westhead of TSN has found another problem Hockey Canada must deal with, and is beyond their control. Following a lawsuit filed in Milton, ON regarding abuse in the CHL, insurers Allianz Global Risk Company and AIG have refused to provide coverage to the league.

Insurance companies are threatening to withhold coverage from Hockey Canada and the CHL and its three major junior leagues and teams as they battle a high-stakes hazing, bullying and abuse lawsuit, court documents say.

As part of the lawsuit, NHL veterans Daniel "Carbomb" Carcillo, Garrett Taylor, and Stephen Quirk claim the league and its leadership perpetuate a toxic culture that fosters violent, discriminatory, homophobic, and sexualized behavior, including sexual assaults on young players.

In response, sixteen more former CHL players aged 27-57 filed affidavits in which they detailed their abuse in the league.

Hockey Canada will continue to endure this continuous song and dance until there is a major change in culture and leadership, as there are sure to be more improprieties that have not yet been revealed.

There will have to be major accountability and recompense for those who suffered in order for people to trust major organizations like the Canadian Hockey League or Hockey Canada again in the future. Additionally, a cultural shift must occur in all aspects of minor hockey and junior hockey from the top down.
