First and foremost, let it be known that Jonathan Toews has a no-trade clause in his contract. Meaning the Blackhawks won't trade him to any team that he does not approve. Similar to the Marc-Andre Fleury situation earlier this year. In that situation, the Blackhawks were able to get a conditional second round pick in return, which can be turned into a first round pick. This situation differs however due to the fact that the Blackhawks are not in as urgent of a place to move Toews as they were Fleury. It was no secret that the Blackhawks were looking to trade Fleury before the deadline. With Toews, there is no deadline. Kyle Davidson has all off-season to shop around and get what he wants in return, which should be at least a first round draft pick.
If Brandon Hagel is worth two first rounders, Toews is for sure worth at least one even with his declining play. What contender wouldn't love to have a guy like Toews bring in all of his playoff experience and knowledge to go on a cup run. He may not play the biggest part stat wise, but he can still play a vital role. And for any team that feels that they are one player away from making a cup run, giving up one first round pick most likely won't them up at night.
Of course all of this is speculation. Jonathan Toews and Kyle Davidson could sit down sometime this off-season and get on the same page somehow. But one thing is for sure, anything less than a first round pick (even from a shortened list of teams provided by Toews) is a failure of a trade for Kyle Davidson.
Let's take a look as Jonathan Toews's career highlights with the Chicago Blackhawks:
