Of course, one of them is Lucas Raymond, along with Jonatan Berggren who will be our focus today.
Berggren shows a ton of humility, which some of his own countrymen like soccer pro, Zlatan Ibrahimović lack, when it comes his own skillset.
Which is primarily being a goal-scoring forward, as demonstrated when he scored his first hat-trick, he assumed it'd be his last.
He remains humble, even when he makes massive achievements including being told of his own 300 professional hockey game mark as well. It is an admirable trait, much like defenseman Simon Edvinsson, who brags about his off-ice soccer skills, but is bashful when told how great he is on ice.
While Berggren claimed to be a playmaker previously, this year he wanted to play more of a selfish game.
He feels it's selfish to shoot on the net, rather than making a pass. For someone who wants to play selfishly, the contradiction is astounding.
This comes to mind, when some Wings forego shooting on the empty net for this very reason, and adding a pass to the play, instead of shooting the puck themselves.
This mindset could also cause a loss in points to other players, which of course doesn't lend well to the succes of the Red Wings.
Which of course, if Berggren were to pass with a good lane to pass through, it's smart to make the pass. However, sometimes this didn't lend well to Berggren's passing game as he made some mistakes this season. So to reframe, this shouldn't be about selfish, or selfless in terms of playstyle, but about what's best for the Wings.
Comparing Raymond and Berggren's stats in different leagues, you can see the full picture:
Raymond's confident in his shot and instead of thinking selfish versus selfless, he does what is best for the Red Wings. He plays without being detrimental to his team.
It seems that Berggren lacks in what counts the most and that is self-confidence, where he seems to take less credit for his own play.
He's a great playmaker, he can play in all areas of the ice and be an offensive force, driving play where he is needed to. He can be a force multiplier on ice and that speaks well to his skills.
Berggren's own lack of confidence seems to contract his own play, as he willed the Grand Rapids Griffins to home advantage through the 1st round of the AHL playoffs.
This seems like an easy exploit for the Rockford IceHogs to make in the AHL when it comes to finding a weak spot in Berggren's play style.
With players like Isaak Phillips and Ethan Del Mastro in the defensive core, they need to make life painful for Berggren and the Griffins in order to make up for lost time during the 2023-2024 regular season.
Anders Sorenson should take note and make the correct adjustments.
