Hurricanes Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour Just Ruined Luke Richardson's Chances at Finding New NHL Job
The Chicago Blackhawks' playing style looks quite different lately, and Rod Brind'Amour trashed former coach Luke Richardson with his latest statement.
It's been 21 games since Interim Coach Anders Sorensen took over the Chicago Blackhawks.
The team looks more high-powered, and offense-driven, while the record hasn't been much, as Sorensen himself is 7-12-2. Good enough for a .381 winning percentage, again the worst in the league.
The contrast between the two coaches hasn't been talked about much lately, as the honeymoon period has worn off for the fans, and the league with the first Swedish Coach in the NHL.
One thing is remarkably different for Carolina Hurricanes Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour though.
It spells bad news for Richardson, who according to Brind'Amour never had a plan for the team, unlike Sorensen.
Lately [they have] a lot more structure. When we're prescouting it, it's like, 'Ooo, they have a plan.' You can see exactly what's happening. That's what good teams do: they're going to be here, here, here. And yep, that's what they're doing. They obviously have the weapons, but it seems like there's a little more plan or structure. Maybe there's more buy-in, I don't know.»
- Rod Brind-Amour
This is a tough look for Richardson who one day hopes to return to the NHL in a Head-Coaching role.
Richardson's "system" according to Brind'Amour's pre-scouting lacked structure and buy-in.
And for that, he paid the ultimate cost this year, losing his job as the Blackhawks head coach, putting Connor Bedard in a slump, and starting the Hawks off on a bad path.
When Richardson was fired, he had an 8-16-2 record this year, which resulted in a .364 winning percentage.
It seems his competitors had his number the entire time, especially if Brind'Amour's observations were accurate.
According to Statmuse, Richardson hadn't done enough to move the needle:
The Chicago Blackhawks have a record of 39-44-7-4 versus the Hurricanes all-time.
While Brind'Amour's comments are disappointing when we look at the Blackhawks' past, the future could be bright as Sorensen has seen just a little over half of the season leading the team.
But when another team's head coach acknowledges an improvement in structure, which is «what good teams do,» that holds a lot more weight.
The structure is good, and we can see how it's benefitting someone like Connor Bedard, and Tyler Bertuzzi in the second half of the year.
