Martinez was lost due to a neck injury but has not been placed on injury reserve as he was hit by a puck on Saturday.
This led rookie head coach Anders Sorensen to call up goaltender Drew Commesso and defenseman Kevin Korchinski from the Rockford Ice Hogs.
It's clear that Sorenson played a major part in recalling Kochinski as the organization feels that he is the most NHL ready defensemen they have in their farm system. Last season he played with the Blackhawks and many felt that he should have spent some time in the AHL prior to being brought up to the main team.
The 20-year-old defender who was drafted in the 2022 entry draft by the Blackhawks, first round seven pick overall played 76 games last year. He scored five goals with 10 assists for 15 points and had 20 penalty minutes and was given an average ice time of 19 minutes and 37 seconds.
Commesso has yet to play a game in the NHL since he was drafted in the 2020 draft, second round 46th overall. During last year's season with Rockford, he played 38 games with a record of 18-16-4 along with the goals against of 2.65 on the save percentage of .906 with two shutouts.
It remains to be seen on how well Korchinski and Commesso will adapt to the NHL but korchinski will likely fair better as he has played.
