NHL Rumored to Move Chicago Blackhawks Organization Due to Expansion
The Chicago Blackhawks, a staple of the NHL's Western Conference, could be relocated East with buzz around possible expansion in the league.
While fans could be hesitant with the Blackhawks moving out of their division, there is a big silver lining to it.
The Chicago Blackhawks could be brought back into the division of one of their most historic rivals, the Detroit Red Wings.
Both original six teams have had hatred for each other for quite some time, the Blackhawks' arrival in the Red Wings' division could certainly re-spark the rivalry.
The Blackhawks would not only be reunited with the Red Wings, but other original six teams in the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canada, and New York Rangers. It would greatly benefit the NHL's revenue.
The NHL is reportedly expanding soon, and per report New Orleans is pushing hard to acquire a spot for an NHL franchise, signalling a geographic realignment will be in the cards if so.
If an odd number of teams ends up being added [highly unlikely for expansion] the Blackhawks would remain in the West, but if a city like Houston also got a franchise, Chicago would likely be moved to play alongside their original 6 buddies in the Eastern Conference.
Seeing the Original Six matchup several times a year, especially in the playoffs, would spark new passion for fans and certainly benefit Gary Bettman's pockets with the move.
However, noted by reports, if the Quebec Nordiques or a team in Atlanta resurfaces in the NHL, a team such as the Detroit Red Wings may move back to the West - also reuniting their rivalry with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Whether the Blackhawks make their move east, or the Red Wings elsewhere, a rivalry is bound to be reunited.
*Authors note:
The NHL would not be relocating the Blackhawks organization, they would remain in Chicago of course, this is just a divisional move.
