The Blackawks are getting rid of this goaltender, and we now know the date
The Chicago Blackhawks are in an untenable situation soon if goalie Laurent Brossoit doesn't return to the lineup. The goalie has been out of commission after his meniscus surgery, and has been skating recently, but hasn't been cleared to take the netminding duties yet.
Since then, the Blackhawks have had to utilize
Arvid Soderblom, who worked on his game significantly, since the end of the last season.
He's shown up and played a solid game, even though the team in front has let him down. Albeit, there are new troubles on the horizon for the Chicago Blackhawks, as Soderblom nears a statistic that could be an issue.
Soderblom's six appearances this season have him up to 56 career NHL appearances; once he gets to 60, he'll require waivers.
With his improvement in play, the Hawks are happy but with only 4 more NHL games underneath his belt he'll no longer be able to be reassigned to the IceHogs.
He'll have to clear waivers, meaning any NHL team could claim him from the wire. With a .926 save percentage, some teams in the NHL could use some depth in the net.
Considering how much Soderblom has increased his stock - he has a .926 save percentage compared to .879 last season - that's a risk the Hawks would be reluctant to take. Instead, they would be stuck with a logjam of three NHL goalies.
Should Brossoit fail to move forward in his progress toward recovery from his meniscus surgery, will they have to tap into Rockford once again and call up
Drew Commesso?
Or will it be a case of the Hawks utilizing trades in order to safeguard Soderblom? Either way, this could be a calamity for the Hawks, should they have to place him on waivers.
He'd be an affordable add for any club as he has a $962K salary cap hit and will hit RFA status in 2025.
