However ever since the NHL decided to go to a flat cap since the Covid 19 pandemic that was set at the amount of $82.5 million dollars while some teams have managed to make it work others haven't.
Infact we've learned that there's a total of 18 teams have stayed under that total almost half have went over a total of 14 that have excited that salary cap. The NHL has announced those 14 teams that have went over are now going to be punished heading I to next season and will have to balance the books with a reduced cap next season.
According to Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the NHL officially informed the following 14 teams that they have exceeded the cap and revealed the culprits
Vancouver: $1,250,000
Montreal: $1,132,500
St. Louis: $1,100,000
Edmonton: $896,000
Dallas: $675,000
Florida and Los Angeles: $637,500
Philadelphia: $295,000
Islanders: $245,795
Chicago: $237,500
Toronto: $212,500
Carolina: $112,500
Washington: $100,000
Colorado: $25,000
The salary cap is going increase by a total of $1,000,000 next season but unfortunately for the teams that went over they will to subtract the amounts above off their 2022-23 roster.
Cap Friendly reports that they have «Calculated the earned performance bonuses for every player this season, and have identified that 14 teams couldn't absorb these bonuses with cap space. The result for these teams is a reduced salary cap ceiling in 2022-23.»
