The GWG came from Captain Darryl Sutter, at just over 15 minutes of OT, pushing the Hawks to 6 over Minnesota's 5. This also happened to be Sutter's second OT goal of the series, having scored the first in the 7-6 double OT win just 5 days prior.

Going into the playoffs, Chicago had a record of 38-35-7, with Minnesota at 25-43-12. With players like Sutter (whose regular season record stood at 38 points in 49 games - 20 goals and 18 assists), Denis Savard, Steve Larmer, Troy Murray, and goalie Murray Bannerman - plus the fact that in that series, all but 3 players scored at least 1 goal. And 2 of those 3 had assists. Sutter scored 5 goals in those 6 games. Tom Lysiak and Al Secord each scored 4. Denis Savard had 12 points, with 3 goals and 9 assists. Unfortunately, the Hawks were knocked out of the playoffs in the Clarence Campbell Conference Final by the Edmonton Oilers, who went on to win the Cup.
Even now, after a playing career of 406 games, 161 goals, 118 assists, and 279 points, Darryl Sutter is still a strong presence in the hockey world as the Head Coach for the champions of the Pacific Division. This is actually his second time coaching the Flames after being hired in March of 2021 to replace a fired Geoff Ward. His first experience with Calgary started back in December of 2002, 4 weeks after he was fired by San Jose. After the season was over, he was promoted to GM, while still remaining Head Coach until 2006.
And on Tuesday, we'll see him behind the bench, again, as he and the Calgary Flames take on the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
