Over the last three years, the Avalanche have been a model for how the Blackhawks need to shape their rebuild. They are a fast paced, high octane team that never quits. Their mix of youth and experienced talent set them apart from the rest of the pack when they took home the Stanley Cup. Now, the Avalanche seem to be falling apart after receiving some brutal news.
Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog needs another surgery. He will be undergoing a cartilage transplant in his right knee on Wednesday and will be expected to miss the entire 2023-2024 season. Landeskog missed the entire 2022-2023 season due to the same issue.
Landeskog stated that he talked to numerous doctors and medical experts, getting opinions, learning about what the different approaches would be. Unfortunately for Landeskog and the Avalanche, the best option puts their 30 year old captain out of action for the entire season.
The Avalanche will be up against the cap moving forward, but will have some roster flexibility this season with Landeskog on LTIR. It'll be interesting to see how Colorado managed the cap moving forward, but hopefully Landeskog can return to the game healthy and contributing.
