Apparently Brendan Shanahan blocked certain transactions Kyle Dubas wanted to make over a course of multiple seasons.
The Leafs President also at times dictated certain moves he wanted made that Dubas didn't agree with. This obviously causing tension within their relationship with one another. Over the course of two days more details have emerged regarding Brendan Shanahan forcing Kyle Dubas' hand. It turns out, Shanahan prevented Dubas from making a massive trade that would've greatly impacted the Leafs.
At last year's trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs were looking for a way to be a true playoff team. Kyle Dubas, thought acquiring Brandon Hagel and Marc-Andre Fleury would be the perfect fit.
The trade never came true, with Hagel getting traded to Tampa Bay and Fleury to Minnesota. But Brenden Shanahan, is the one to blame for the deal never coming full circle.
A big factor in this deal was including Matthew Knies, who has since signed with Toronto and already made an impact. The Leafs view Knies as their top prospect and were clearly hesitant about his inclusion in this deal.
It is unknown if the Leafs would've been better off today had they made this trade, but it definitely shows the rough relationship between Shanahan and Dubas.
