An interesting forward will hit free agency in July and the Blackhawks should consider signing him. That forward, filled with grit and speed is none other than Max Domi.
Max, who is 27 years old has already played on four NHL teams in his seven years in the league. He has pretty decent career numbers showing 101 goals, 213 assists in 501 games. He is a fairly accurate shooter, hitting his target 10.1 percent of the time.
The thing which Domi could add to the Hawks' lineup is his strong physical game where he has been assessed 430 minutes. His in-your-face attitude may be used to help the younger players and protect them from opposing teams' bullies.
The Blackhawks will have about $20.2 million in cap space and need to decide what they will be doing with forward free agents,
Dylan Strome ($3M),
Kirby Dach ($925,000 entry level contract), and Dominik Kubalik ($3.7M).
Domi has completed his two-year $5.3M AAV deal he signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was subsequently traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in March involving a three-team deal.
While Domi is no super-star, he is an above average NHL player who can contribute 40-45 points. He had one fluke season while in Montreal where he excelled expectations tallying 72 points, with 28 goals during the 2018-19 campaign.
He is versatile in that he can play on the wing or center. He is more effective as a winger and could be useful for the Hawks on a third-line role. He possesses above average speed, and can score with the best of them.
With the Hawks in a rebuild, he may be a useful asset to have around the younger players in the locker room.
Now, the difficult part. What would Domi be willing to accept in a contract? With his reduced numbers and not great defensive abilities, he may be worth in the $3-$3.5 million range.
Domi could definitely re-sign with the Hurricanes as he seemed to fit in well with them. Yet, the Blackhawks should investigate the possibilities of bringing him to the Windy City.
He's definitely would become a fan favorite with his entertaining style of hockey.
Let's see what general manager Kyle Davidson does with this possibility.
