The private lives of professional athletes have become more public than ever in the past 40 years due to the power of the Internet and social media.

Sports fans now get to see in greater detail the lives of pro athletes, including their spouses and children. While some athletes have great lives and everyone is happy, others face challenges such as family splits, alcohol or drug use, and other issues.

One such case involves Sean Avery, the former NHL enforcer who is most famously known for his time with the New York Rangers.

Avery's ex-wife, Hilary Rhonda, recently filed a restraining order against him, bringing to light serious allegations regarding their life together and the welfare of their three-year-old son. Court documents revealed the nature of the violence, stating,

"He grabbed me by the arms and shook me, twice. I was very scared for my safety and called the police." Rhonda expressed feeling threatened by Sean's behaviour, adding, "Sean also yells, swears, and name-calls constantly. He follows me, trying to get me to engage. He has engaged in many instances of physical abuse against me and against third parties. Sean has also been physically and emotionally abusive to our son, Nash."

There have been documented cases where professional athletes who have suffered concussions and experienced physical play exhibit tendencies of aggressive behaviour and violence towards their loved ones.

Rhonda further explained an incident that occurred in June 2022, stating,

"Sean became irritated when our son woke up sick in the middle of the night. He screamed at me (in front of Nash) to go get Nash's 'f**king medicine,' and then aggressively punched the wall in Nash's bedroom and our bedroom door. Nash witnessed this and was scared, holding onto me. Sean then followed me to the kitchen, and as I was trying to get Nash's medicine, he ripped the cabinet door open, slamming my finger between the open cabinet and the wall. I was petrified of Sean and his physical and aggressive behaviour."

ETonline reached out for further comments, but no response was given.
