In a scandal involving a fellow player's girlfriend, Brendan Leipsic made derogatory comments about her appearance and physique.

As a result, on May 8, 2020, he was placed on waivers and his contract was terminated.

Brendan Leipsic 🇨🇦 has sent a letter to Vladimir Putin requesting Russian citizenship. He already has a Russian passport.

Leipsic, 29, has played the past three seasons in Russia after leaving North America when he was exposed for making fun of his teammates and their wives in private Instagram group chats.

If Leipsic obtains citizenship, he'd be able to play for the Russian National Team 🇷🇺

Leipsic has since been playing in the KHL in Russia, currently as a member of SKA St. Petersburg after being brought over by CSKA Moscow in August of 2021.

He appears to have taken a liking to Russia and has even requested citizenship from Vladimir Putin, having already obtained a Russian passport.

Leipsic, originally from Winnipeg and a former draft pick of the Nashville Predators, has been playing in the KHL for the past three seasons after being released by the Washington Capitals.
