Gary Bettman's Cynical Ploy to Make More Money Off of Players
Recently, the NHL has been looking for ways to increase revenue for both fans and players following the impact of SARSCOV2 on the 20202-2021 season.
Gary Bettman, alongside the NHLPA, has been exploring alternate options to achieve this goal. While generating more money is not a bad thing, the concern lies in where the funds will be allocated.
Unfortunately, it seems that the proposed plan to increase the number of games from the current 82 to 84 per season is a ploy to garner sympathy for the owners.
This move does not take into consideration the players' health and well-being, and could potentially lead to more time away from their families and unnecessary physical strain.
While the idea of increasing competition between teams is appealing in theory, the NHLPA should only agree to this proposal if it is worth it and properly compensates the players for their efforts.
See below for the difference between the 82 and 84-game seasons:
2 games against each opposite conference team (32 total games)
3 games against the same conference but in different division teams (24 total games
3 games against two same-division teams (6 total games)
4 games against the remaining 5 division rivals (20 total games)
84:
2 games against each opposite conference team (32 total games)
3 games against the same conference but in different division teams (24 total games
4 games against the seven division rivals (28 total games)
