San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche Gear Up And Completed Trade Which Sees Goaltenders Heading Each Way

The San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche teamed up for a big trade on Monday, sending a goaltender each way.

Goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood and forward Givani Smith is heading to the Colorado Avalanche, as well as a 2027 fifth round NHL draft pick.

In exchange for those assets, the Sharks are acquiring Alexander Georgiev (with 14% salary retained by the Avalanche), forward Nikolai Kovalenko, alongside a 2026 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round draft pick.

We have traded Alexandar Georgiev and Nikolai Kovalenko to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Mackenzie Blackwood and Givani Smith.

The Avalanche have moved away both their goaltender within the past week and a half, sending Georgiev, Kahkonen and Justus Annunnen away in trades, while acquiring Scott Wedgewood and Blackwood.

Oddly enough, Kovalenko, who was traded Monday, is being traded on the anniversary of his father being moved, check it out:

On Dec. 6, 1995, Colorado trades Andrei Kovalenko - as part of a trade for a new No.1 goalie

29 years and 3 days later, Colorado trades Nikolai Kovalenko (Andrei's son) - as part of a trade for a new No.1 goalie.

While many are unaware of what the Avalanche are doing, they are sure trying everything.

With a Stanley Cup win just a few years ago, it appears that the Avalanche is coming down hard in Colorado, with the franchise declining as the days go on.
