On this day in November, the Blackhawks made a regrettable trade which sent Nick Schmaltz to the Arizona Coyotes.

The move is another case of a failed trade by Stan Bowman, which would bite the Blackhawks in the rear end later.

What the Blackhawks would receive for Schmaltz is Brendan Perlini and Dylan Strome. Neither of whom would be the kind of contributors that Schmaltz would be in Arizona later down the road.

"Nick is a dynamic forward with top-line potential," said John Chayka, Arizona's head of hockey operations. "We feel he can be a core player of our team now and into the future. He's a good complement to our evolving forward group and a rare combination of speed, skill and creativity."

Nick Schmaltz

Before Bowman decided to trade Schmaltz, he scored 11 points in 23 games with the Hawks.

During that season he'd only score 25 points in total, playing only 40 games in the NHL. In 2019-2020 is when he'd supercharge his play and become a reliable contributor to the Coyotes, now known as the "Hockey Club" know him to be scoring 45 points(11 G, 34 A) in 70 games.

He'd reach his career high in points during the 2021-2022(59 points) and 2023-2024 seasons (61 points) while scoring 20+ goals during each campaign.

Dylan Strome

Strome would play 20 games with the Arizona Coyotes, scoring only 6 points before getting a fresh start in Chicago. He'd play 58 games during the 2018-2019 season and grab the reins on his fresh start scoring 51 points(17 G, 34 A). He'd remain with the Blackhawks until the end of the 2021-2022 season, and would later sign a $25 Million dollar deal with the Washington Capitals.

The center is now a key piece in the Capitals' recent string of successes.

Strome leads the team in points this year having 28 points in the team's 19 games. He has scored 6 goals and has 22 assists. He currently is 3rd in the entire NHL is total assists. He's behind only Nathan MacKinnon and Jack Eichel. Players who most would call elite.

What do the Blackhawks have to show for it? Absolutely nothing.

Brendan Perlini

While Brendan Perlini was last seen playing in the AHL for the Charlotte Checkers in 2023-2024 playing only 37 games and scoring 20 points.

He was originally drafted by the Arizona Coyotes 12th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft.
