The Chicago Blackhawks and GM Kyle Davidson could be cooking up a trade, as they have made a move before game time that is questionable.

With Alec Martinez out, they have had to rely upon a call-up in Isaak Phillips this week to fill the gap the veteran had left.

Phillips would have been more than serviceable of a replacement for Martinez. However, they have sent him down to the AHL, as they have called up Drew Commesso.

A surprising move, given the fact that Commesso has never played a game in the NHL, only preseason play.

Commesso and Phillips were apparently on the ice at morning skate, with Assistant Coach Derek Kings.

So what is happening in the Blackhawks camp? Is GM Kyle Davidson cooking up a trade for Petr Mrazek or Arvid Soderblom?

It's been known in the media that the Blackhawks are in the hunt for a 2nd-line center behind Connor Bedard and those don't magically fall out of the sky.

What kind of package would Davidson be able to leverage, and to whom would he deal Soderblom or Mrazek for a highly-valued asset?

With Laurent Brossoit waiting in the wings to become the next Blackhawks goalie in the depth charts, we're puzzled by the recent decisions by Kyle Davidson.

Hopefully, can we resolve the opacity from this, as the story develops.

On Wednesday, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported the Blackhawks (and Calgary Flames) are looking around for an upgrade at the center position in their top six. And Thursday morning, Elliotte Friedman followed suit and reported similarly in a written version of his «32 Thoughts.»
