Blackhawks Deal Major Demotion to $76M Blueliner Seth Jones
Seth Jones Faces Heat After Demotion, Addresses Fan Criticism After Season-Worst Game Against Calgary Flames on Monday
Seth Jones, one of the highest paid NHL defenseman and supposed 'top defenseman' of the Chicago Blackhawks hit an all-time low last night, when the Blackhawks hosted the Calgary Flames at the United Center.
It's a shocking move for Jones, as fans have been calling for this to be done for quite some time now.
The Blackhawks kept their losing streak alive by a losing score of 5-2, and Jones was on the ice for 4/5 of the Flames' goals scored.
Jones faced a major demotion by head coach Anders Sorensen, at last, the team has demoted him to the third defensive pairing; playing the least amount of minutes during a game since he joined the organization in 2021, playing just 16 minutes and 19 seconds.
«You could argue that was still too much ice time after a plus-minus rating of -4.»
Said an enraged Blackhawks fan on social media.
Seth Jones faces criticism head coach, admits his wrongs to Blackhawks media
Jones surely did not shy away from the backlash he's faced, and specifically on one play. The Blackhawks had all momentum in their hopes for a comeback, after Connor Bedard scored his 100th career NHL point, but Jones decided to give up the puck, killing the Blackhawks momentum on their own power play.
«It was a boneheaded play.»
Said Jones
Jones is in the second year of a whopping $76M contract handed out by general manager Stan Bowman, and Jones knows it comes with big expectations:
"We're not putting the product on the ice we want to, and I gladly take the blame for that. Supposedly that comes with the territory, with the contract I got, but I'm willing to stand in front of it. The losing obviously doesn't helpbut it starts with myself.»
As one of the NHL's highest-paid players, he must perform on and off the ice, and Jones is not living up to either of those.
A demotion was made in ice time, and it seems like a further one needs to be made, as in a healthy-scratching.
While Jones owns up to the criticism, let's see if he can back his words up.
