Hockey fans were surprised as Patrick Kane, a Blackhawks icon, unexpectedly joined the Detroit Red Wings, a historic rival, this off-season.

This unexpected move is like the 1999 trade that brought Chris Chelios from the Blackhawks to Detroit.

Kane's arrival in Detroit came through a one-year deal, hitting the ice just over a month ago. Despite recovering from surgery, Kane has showcased top-tier form.

However, Detroit faced challenges in late 2023, securing the second-worst NHL record from December 7 to the 31st.

While Kane isn't solely responsible for Detroit's struggles, the team rebounded in 2024 with two wins so far, reigniting hopes for a playoff spot. Speculation about Kane's potential trade at the deadline persisted, aligning with recent trends due to Kane's agent coming to an agreement with the Red Wings that if playoffs are out of the picture, Kane may decide to lift his no-trade clause.

Now, it appears things have taken a turn.

Retirement plan leaked for Patty Kane?

Kane's next deal is expected to be his last NHL contract, at age 35 and coming off of hip surgery, Kane is only expected to be around for 2-3 more seasons maximum depending on the condition of his new resurfaced hip.

Max Bultman, a writer from The Athletic credentialed by the NHL, threw a curveball recently, stating that Kane is likely to extend his stay in Detroit and sign a brand new deal, to end up retiring with the team.

"But the bet here is that Kane stays put. He has a no-trade clause, for one, but frankly I would have a hard time seeing Detroit move him without his blessing regardless. He chose Detroit, the Red Wings wanted him, and he's playing well for them in a big role."

"So, instead of a trade, why not an extension? Detroit has money coming off the books this summer, with David Perron and Daniel Sprong pending UFAs up front, and at 35, Kane won't be commanding an especially long-term deal."

"The cap hit will be fascinating, especially if Kane keeps producing at this rate, but on a short deal, the Red Wings can afford to splurge a bit for a player of Kane's talent. I'll say he sticks around for two years at a cap hit around $5-6 million."

Kane's no-trade clause adds an interesting layer, requiring Detroit to secure his approval for any move. With impressive performances and flexibility from pending UFAs like David Perron and Daniel Sprong, an extension seems to be incoming.

Little Caesars Arena has seen a wave of Kane jerseys, reflecting the warm reception from Red Wings fans. The possibility of Kane's tenure stretching beyond this season has been reportedly in the works, and it will be interesting to see what kind of salary Kane earns.
