New York Rangers fire one of their own staff members after having dinner with a player

The New York Rangers are in one of the worst slumps their franchise has experienced, and they kicked things off by trading their captain, Jacob Trouba traded to the Anaheim Ducks

And just one week later, another trade was made. Sending former second-overall draft pick Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken, Kakko traded to Kraken from Rangers for Borgen, 2 picks in 2025 NHL Draft

They are currently sixth in the NHL's Metro Division, losing seven of their last ten games.

After two trades and a horrible slump, fans truly thought it couldn't get much worse... but it has?

According to a story by Lohud.com the New York Rangers told their players and staff that they fired an employee by the name of Jim Ramsay, due to him having dinner with a player after a team media event.

In the headline deemed "Culture Problems", Journalist Vincent Z. Mercogliano stated the following:

"In the aftermath of a PR person being fired for having dinner with a player following a media event prior to the new season, a letter signed by Drury, as well as Knicks president Leon Rose and MSG COO Jamaal Lesane, was distributed to all team employees issuing "a reminder regarding the expectations of behavior when interacting with the players or coaches of any of our Teams."

Staffers were told that "absent written approval from an Executive Vice President ('EVP') or above," they were prohibited from staying at the same hotel as any of the teams under the MSG umbrella, including the minor-league Hartford Wolf Pack and Westchester Knicks, traveling on team flights or buses, or attending team social gatherings or meals, according to the memo."

The internal memo read: "Interactions between employees and players or coaches must be strictly limited except as necessary to satisfy the requirements of an employee's role," it read. "Failure to comply with the directives set forth in this memorandum may result in disciplinary action, including, without limitation, termination of employment."

A simple player-employee dinner would typically produce better morale and improve team bonding, no? Well, according to general manager Chris Drury, that's unacceptable.
