BREAKING: A freak injury-forced retirement for NHL 2-time Cup winner
Two-time Stanley Cup champion winger, Carl Hagelin, has officially announced his retirement from professional hockey via an Instagram post at the age of 35. Hagelin's decision comes after missing the 2022-23 season due to severe eye and hip injuries.
The Final Farewell
In his retirement announcement, Hagelin shared,
«It's been an amazing ride, but it ends here. Unfortunately, my eye injury is too severe to keep playing the game I love."
Earlier in the offseason, he had expressed hope to return for the 2023-24 NHL season, but circumstances have led to a different outcome. His four-year, $11MM contract extension signed with the Washington Capitals in 2019 concluded on July 1.
An Unconventional Path
Picked in the sixth round of the 2007 NHL Draft by the New York Rangers, Hagelin took a unique route for European prospects. He swiftly transitioned to North America, embarking on a successful four-year collegiate career with the University of Michigan.
From college, Hagelin transitioned to the NHL with the Rangers. He made an impactful rookie debut with 38 points in 64 games, showcasing his two-way play and speed. While his subsequent seasons saw consistent production in the 30-40 point range, Hagelin's true impact went beyond the scoresheet, embodying a middle-six forward with versatility.
Penguins' Playoff Hero
Hagelin's tenure with the Penguins proved pivotal. He played an essential role in Pittsburgh's back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017. In the 2016 playoffs, he contributed significantly alongside Nick Bonino and Phil Kessel, solidifying a legendary third line.
Throughout his career, Hagelin's journey led him to the Washington Capitals, where he continued to excel as a bottom-six scoring winger. His retirement marks the end of a championship-caliber career.
Carl Hagelin's retirement from hockey is a poignant moment. As he closes this chapter, we extend our well-wishes for his recovery and celebrate his impactful career, which left an indelible mark on the sport he loves.
