In a big move for D.C. sports, the Washington Capitals and Wizards reportedly will be packing up for Northern Virginia.
Word got out that Ted Leonsis, who owns most of both teams, is seriously thinking about relocating them. Sources spilled the beans that Leonsis and Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin will be at an event in Potomac Yard on Wednesday, a move signaling a step closer to this potential change.
This news hit on Monday when it came out that Leonsis was eyeing a move across the river. Now, Virginia lawmakers gave the thumbs up to a plan that aims to lure the Capitals and Wizards to a huge 8 million-square-foot sports and mixed-use spot in Alexandria, Va.
The deal is sealed, it seems. The Caps and the Wizards are set to leave D.C. for Northern Virginia, and word has it that Ted Leonsis will be at the Potomac Yard event, starting at 9 am, alongside Governor Glenn Youngkin.
The idea here is that building a new spot on 70 acres will let Monumental Sports and Entertainment grow.
It's a game-changer for the teams and the area. The event at Potomac Yard, happening tomorrow, could be the key moment in this big move for the franchises.
