As the preseason has gotten underway, there are many new faces in Chicago, some veterans and some rookies looking to earn an opening night roster spot. The Blackhawks will look different on the ice this year after the departure of Kirby Dach and Alex DeBrincat, but head coach Luke Richardson is playing around with potential line and unit combinations.
One unit that has looked great through practice and training camp has been the first powerplay unit. Richardson has Seth Jones running the point, Patrick Kane in the right circle, Max Domi in the left circle, Andreas Athanasiou playing the bumper role, and Taylor Raddysh playing center and in front of the net.
It is surprising that Jonathan Toews isn't a part of the first powerplay unit due to his high faceoff percentage and past success on the powerplay. It is clear that the Blackhawks are focusing on putting players with speed and quick shot abilities on its first powerplay unit, which is an adjustment to compete with the growing quickness of play in the NHL. It will be interesting to see if this unit sticks together and finds success throughout the preseason and into the start of the regular season.
