The Blackhawks fell to the defending Stanley Cup champs, the Colorado Avalanche, last night by a score of 5-2.

It was a rough go for the young Blackhawks squad as the Avalanche were clearly just the bigger, faster, stronger, and overall better team on the ice last night. The score was 5-2 but it could have easily been 8-2.

The Avalanche had quality chances all night, but seemed to get too "pretty" at times and failed to connect on a goal. The Blackhawks were outshot 35-17 and gave up 4 power play goals on 6 attempts.

Petr Mrazek was not too bad in the season opener, as 4 of the 5 goals he gave up were tip-ins. He did wander away from net a bit too much for comfort, but you could tell the guy was just trying to compete. That's all we can ask for from the Blackhawks squad this season.

They head to Vegas tonight to try to bounce back, although this matchup is also tough.

The Blackhawks lines seem to be remaining the same as last nights game:

Athanasiou-Domi-Kane
T. Johnson-Toews-Raddysh
Kurashev-Lafferty-Entwistle
Blackwell-Khaira-Robinson

J. Johnson-S. Jones
Tinordi-Murphy
Roos-Regula

Mrazek
Stalock

The Blackhawks have struggled against Vegas to this date. Since the Golden Knights entered the league, the Blackhawks are 2-9-1 against them while getting outscored 51-40.

Vegas is 1-0-0 after beating the Kings on a goal with less than 30 seconds to go in regulation in their season opener.

They could use improvement on the defensive end, but their offensive abilities are solid and can help them to make a run in the playoffs.

Expect another rough matchup to open the season for the young Blackhawks squad.
