The NHL's two most well-known and competitive rivals are the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks. The clubs, which were both members of the Original Six, have seen several decades and division changes together, yet their rivalry has persisted ever since they first faced off in 1926.
As of 2022, the Red Wings and Blackhawks have faced off in 16 Stanley Cup finals throughout their almost century-long rivalry and do so more frequently than virtually any other pair of clubs in the league.
Due to divisional changes throughout the years, the rivalry between the Blackhawks and Red Wings has gone through hot and cold episodes, but it was most exciting in the 1960s. They would compete against one another four times for the Stanley Cup between 1963 and 1966. Both teams had a star-studded stretch during which Gordie Howe and Stu Grimson of the Red Wings scored a staggering amount of goals and frequently engaged in physical altercations with Bobby Hull of the Blackhawks.
The 1980s and earlv 1990s also saw another exciting era for both teams, with notable clashes between Stu Grimson and Bob Probert. Today, the rivalry has cooled somewhat due to the teams being in separate divisions under new drawings (Central Division for Chicago and Atlantic Division for Detroit). However, the traditional hostility has persisted amongst fans.
Fans still have the rivalry in their blood, as do i, but the fans showed it in last nights Blackhawks home opener with chants going back and forth between both teams, check out the video:
